Birthday party preparations

Life has been busy lately, really busy. This morning when I woke up I realised that I had 16 days until our little boys 2nd birthday party. Not only do we have a party to start planning, but we also have a playroom to complete. My clever hubby has built Cruz a playroom for his birthday, and whilst it is carpeted now we still have a lot of work to do before the big reveal.

Other the last 2 or 3 months I have had a number of ideas running around my head for this sweet party, but at times with everything else going on, that can become tiring. This morning I went through all my ideas on Pinterest and started organising each element of the day.

We have 20 different food treats to organise for the day, some being simple, others not so much. I went through my food ideas, numbering each food item and detailing what needed to be done for it in red. I then added timing details in blue so that I knew how far in advance I could make each item. Two of the treats luckily, are being made by other people. Phew.

I then started planning the actual layout of the party, starting with the dessert table. Obviously the drawing is rough and not to scale, but it stops me stressing that I will forget something and also means that I have some idea of how I want the table to look on the day.

There are seven pages that I printed. Some for the food items and timing of them, others for the layout of what the undercover area will look like and then guest lists and reminders of my mile long list of what still needs to be bought. I have placed them all on the right hand side of my computer desk on a clipboard so that I have them on hand at all times. I also plan to take the clipboard with me when I go to do final balloon orders etc.

The last thing that I have done is use a box, bought from Target, to include all the bits and pieces I still need to cut out for Cruz's party. I put some double sided table, sticky tape, a pen and some adhesive paper in there so that I have everything I need in one place.

I am not sure whether doing all this planning was a good or bad idea. On one hand, I am well aware of what needs to be done, but on the other hand, I have a very long intimidating list reminding me of the little time that I have left. My goal is to not sweat the small things and to remember that the aim of the day is for Cruz to have a blast. Mission accepted.

  1. Just found your blog somehow through Pinterest and love it! Is that the Pottery Barn charger? I have the same and the Typo Polka Dot clip :) What program do you use for the dessert table layout? I always put out all the bowls, plates etc the night before with sticky notes to remind me what will go on them - but this is such a better idea!

    1. Jennifer I use Microsoft Word 2010 to do the layouts by inserting different shapes and text into a document. Nice and simple. It sure is a Pottery Barn Charger - aren't they fabulous!

  4. Thanks so much, will be doing this for our next party - still 6 months to go until my little girl turns 2, but you can never start planning too early :) Love Pottery Barn, it is so dangerous now that they ship to Australia. I am eagerly awaiting a cute nightlight I just ordered for my little boy!

  5. Larissa I agree - I am new here today and I am hooked! I love how organised you are. I wonder if the Word equivalent program on Windows Vista does the same thing? I have already clicked on 'followers' on here. Cassie x
